Ultimate Camera Bag For Landscape Photographers

Camera backpacks are essential for landscape photographers, providing comfort, storage, and durability, or they should.  Not all backpacks are made the same. I recently purchased a Shimoda Action X 30 camera bag. The big question is whether it is worth the money. Honestly, I took advantage of a recent sale at Shimoda. I guess they were clearing out the old stock ready to launch the updated version.

I identified a few key complaints that Photographers have with their camera backpacks, through comments on social media and talking to other landscape photographers. How does Shimoda shape up against these?

Comfort and Customisation:

One of the primary concerns for photographers is finding a camera bag that offers comfort during long hours of shooting & trekking. The best locations are not always next to the road, so trekking several miles over rough terrain with heavy gear is an issue. The Shimoda Action X 30 is well-padded with a wide waist belt, providing excellent support and a secure fit. The bag is equipped with an adjustable shoulder harness and back length providing a custom fit. You can go further and purchase wider shoulder straps with additional padding and, a version specially shaped for the female form.

Storage and Access:

Inadequate storage and access to gear are common problems faced by photographers. Access to gear on the Shimoda Action series is industry-leading. A wide-opening clamshell back gives full access to the Internal Camera Unit. Shimoda's gone further, with an ICU range, external pouches, filter wraps and accessories. The bag has a roll-top design that allows it to expand and contract depending on how much non-photographic gear you want to carry. There is plenty of room for waterproofs, clothing,  food and snacks. The outside is smart and tidy. The shoulder harness includes a water bottle and a mobile phone pocket. The Tripod carrying system works well and is duplicated on both sides to suit your preference. With extra lashing points and straps that can be purchased separately an overnight wild camp may be on the cards.

Durability and Protection:

Camera bags need to withstand the vigours of constant use in harsh environments. They are abused, constantly opened and closed more than other rucksacks, scraped on rocks and dropped down on muddy and abrasive ground. The Shimoda Action X 30 is built with high-quality materials, YKK buckles, and durable zippers. The bag appears to be well made, the base is reinforced with thicker material, only time will tell how it stands up. A separate waterproof cover is available for purchase.

Ok, so Shimoda bags are not cheap. I got a good deal in the sale. But knowing what I know now I would have paid full price. Shimoda has recently upgraded their range of camera bags. They are even better. The only question for me is whether I should have waited for the new range to come out first.
